Frequently shod in cowboy boots and backed by country music at campaign events, U.S. Sen. Rod Grams these days resembles the underdog hero in a Western movie classic, approaching a high noon showdown in his fight for political survival.

Laconic and reserved, tall and lanky, with a touch of the stoic loner, he presents himself as a humble but uncompromising fighter for conservative principles, a man of action and not a lot of fancy talk and book-larnin', in the tradition of Gary Cooper, Clint Eastwood and, even more apropos, Ronald Reagan.
