The Rio Tinto Borax mine will see the quantity of stripped overburden soar to 100 Mt this year, from 18-23 Mt.
Overburden removal is one of those necessary evils associated with open pit mining. Overburden is described in Stokes' Dictionary of Mining, Mineral and Related Terms, second edition, as "...material of any nature, consolidated or unconsolidated, that overlies a deposit of useful materials, ores, or coal -- especially those deposits that are mined from the surface by open cuts."
