1. INTRODUCTION

Geophysics, and seismology in particular, has a somewhat uneasy relationship with statistics. On one side, geophysicists have always been passionate collectors, processors, and interpreters of observational data. From Halley in the 17th century to Harold Jeffreys in the 20th century, its leading practitioners have also pioneered important developments in statistics-in graphical and numerical methods, in the treatment of errors, in time series analysis, and in many more specialized topics.
