S.C. hospital defends `policing' pregnant addicts to save lives.(Nation)

South Carolina Attorney General Charles Condon said yesterday that hospitals in his state will continue to alert police when pregnant women use crack cocaine, even if the Supreme Court declares its old program unconstitutional.

"We'll easily be able to continue this policy, because we now obtain consent in every case," Mr. Condon said on the Supreme Court steps shortly after Charleston lawyer Robert Hood told justices the state had a "special need" to protect a fetus against maternal cocaine abuse, even without consent.
