A few months into her apprenticeship at Luck's Ware, where pottery with a special Crawdad Slip glaze is fired in gas and electric kilns, Molcy Solberg has learned at least one trade secret.

"Pottery isn't easy," she said.

"It's simple, but it's not easy," said shop owner Sid Luck, a fifth generation potter.

Solberg, 54, decided to enroll in community college after she was laid off from her office job at a Ramseur textile mill in 1998. But she isn't going after one of the computer or business degrees so popular with workers trying to stake a new claim in the changing ...
