* Defeated at Stalingrad, the Germans pushed forward again near the Soviet city of Kursk. In history's greatest tank battle, 3,000 German tanks were defeated by an equal number of Soviet tanks. The battle of Kursk, after which the nuclear submarine was named, marked the beginning of a Soviet advance toward Germany that ended with German defeat by Allied forces in 1945, when Soviet troops planted the Soviet flag atop the German Reichstag in Berlin (above).
