A U.S. Korean war veteran, who left the peninsula at the end of the conflict in 1953, returned to Korea with memories of a land that had not been built over and replaced with high-rise buildings, concrete pavements and crowded busy streets.

They remembered a dusty ``Highway One'' with nothing on either side for miles; the Suwon Wall surrounded by shell craters, not cars; the sight of Wolmi island as they landed at Inchon and used it to find their bearings, before a causeway was built between it and the mainland.
