The Federal Budget for the year 2000-2001 of Rs. 698 billion with deficit of Rs. 162 billion which is 4.6 per cent of GDP was presented by the Federal Minister for Finance, Mr. Shaukat Aziz on 17, June 2000. The main focus of the budget is to reduce poverty by increasing employment opportunities, accelerating growth, promoting investment, encouraging exports, cutting expenditure and broadening tax base.
