A global accord agreed to by most of the world's major automobile manufacturing countries, including the United States and Japan, to harmonize safety and other regulations for automobiles and other road vehicles, has been put into place, a U.N. agency said.

The accord is also expected to slash costs and help develop more environmentally friendly cars. "The savings will be great in imports and distribution of spare parts, and for producers a great simplification," said a U.N. expert familiar with the agreement.
