UCB PLANS to close a 12,000-ton-per-year cellophane plant in Burgos, Spain--equivalent to almost 30 percent of its European capacity for the material. The company will now have only one cellophane facility in Europe, a 30,000-ton-per-year unit in Bridge-water, UK, the last large cellophane plant in the region.
UCB, which employs 240 people at Burgos, blames the closure on a decline in global demand for commodity cellophane films because they cost more than competing synthetic products.
