Growing up in New York City, I have much opportunity to see woodchucks. The closest I came was a thumping sound coming from underneath the bungalow my family rented one summer along a lake in New Hampshire. My sister and I were told the sound came from a woodchuck, and we imagined a strange beast that gnawed on wood.
