Introduction
This paper examines the implementation of work reorganisation in two Australian open-cut coal companies during the mid-1990s. From the mid-1980s, the Australian coal industry faced a crisis of profitability brought on by rising production costs and declining coal prices. Price reductions followed a period of market prosperity during the 1970s when the demand and price of export coal increased dramatically in response to the OPEC oil crises.
