Here are some facts, tips and pointers from a recent allergy conference I attended:

* Ten percent of preteens and 20% of adolescents are affected by allergies

* Allergies affect 5 million children

* Allergies account for 2 million lost school days

* The most important predisposing factor for a child to develop an allergic disease is family history. If one parent has allergies, the child has a 50% chance of having allergies. If both parents have allergies, the chances increase to 75%.
