1896, Java. Dr. Christaan Eijkman (IKE-man) surveys a hospital ward packed with victims of beriberi a common disease in the far east. Everywhere, patients lie listless and tired, their legs racked with pain. But Dr. Eijkman is leaving--his chickens are sick.

Eijkman had been fortunate: The chickens had contracted beriberi, the same disease he was studying. Was he close to unraveling this terrible disease?

But what rotten luck, now the chickens were recovering.
