This collection began as a session of papers presented at the annual meetings of the American Anthropological Association in November of 1996 in San Francisco. The theme of the meetings that year was 'a critical retrospective' and the idea of 'cargo cult' seemed a likely candidate for such scrutiny. The critique of the term 'cargo cult' had been taking place at least since Roy Wagner's (1981 [1975]) Invention of Culture and Nancy McDowell's (1985) unraveling of 'cargo cult.'
