On 1 August, the European Commission approved Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's operational programme as regards Objective 1 assistance from the EU's Structural Funds in support of less-developed regions. The programme covers the period 2000-2006 and amounts to almost Euro 5.5 billion, Euro 2.456 billion of which will be financed by the EU's Structural Funds. The programme aims to create and maintain 9,000 jobs a year and to provide 224,000 people (almost a third of the working population) with training designed to avert the risk of unemployment.
