I was asked to address issues of quality assurance and quality improvement as they relate to the assessment of prognostic factors in human solid tumors. As I began to relate that task to my own practice of surgical pathology, it became clear to me that the progress that we have experienced over the last decade in delivering a quality product in surgical pathology has been incremental and by design.
