Before the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869 a person wanting to travel from New York to California could expect a journey that took months and that cost more than $1,000.
A week after the ``Golden Spike'' was pounded into a rail in Promontory Point, Utah, a person could travel from New York to California in seven days at a cost ranging from $70 to $150.
The railroad, along with the telegraph lines that ran alongside its tracks, says historian Stephen Ambrose, ``made modern America possible.''
