FOR THE FIRST six months of this year, U.S. investors flung $93 million a day into exchange traded funds, or ETFs, an industry that barely existed three years ago.

Since 1998, assets in these fund/stock hybrids have quadrupled and show no signs of slacking. But they are easier to invest in than they are to understand. Here's what you need to know to make the most of ETFs without going broke in the process.
