I confess to the sin of pride - at least when it comes to world music knowledge.

I didn't need the Buena Vista Social Club to learn there's thrilling music made beyond our border. Heck, I was listening to Ravi Shankar play ragas before George Harrison. I was grooving to Bulgarian singers and Javanese gamelan orchestras back when Nonesuch Records launched its Explorer series in the '60s. I was listening to world music decades before someone even came up with the term.

So, yeah, I sneered when I saw the first batch of Putumayo World Music CD compilations in 1993.
