Lightening the load

To the Editors:

Patti Dean's review (March 2000), of The Oxford Book of English Verse is generously stimulating, and I am grateful. One point, though. "There is nothing from The Prelude in the Wordsworth section." Not altogether so. For the sixty-three lines of "Influence of Natural Objects in Calling Forth and Strengthening the Imagination in Boyhood and Early Youth" form part of The Prelude. The lines, published by Wordsworth in collections from 1815, constitute one of the early five passages of The Prelude known to the public during his lifetime ...
