COUNTRYSIDE: The article on stucco (March/ April, 2000) needs updating from its 1929 source. There are four updates to observe:
First: Old-time stucco mortar was one 94-pound bag of Portland (concrete) cement and two gallons of curd-like slaked lime. It was very strong, but slaked lime can create second- and third-degree burns on the skin. Today's stucco can more easily be made with one-half bag of Portland, one-half bag masonry (brickwork) cement, and about 16 shovelsful of sand, depending On the "sticky" consistency desired; The initial "scratch" or brown coat of stucco ...
