Federal safety regulators are expected to propose new rules today that would let carmakers install less powerful air bags and permit owners to disconnect the devices to protect children and small adults from rapid air bag inflation.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also is expected to outline plans to order carmakers to put tougher warning labels in cars to warn motorists of the potential danger of air bags to unbelted drivers and passengers.
