By conventional political standards, Randy Tate's bid for re-election to Congress could be in trouble.

The freshman Republican trailed state Sen. Adam Smith, his Democratic challenger, by 1,206 votes in the primary. Incumbents who fall behind in the primary usually never recover.

But time and time again, Tate has defied conventional politics.

At age 22, while studying political science in college, Tate ran for the state Legislature and took on Frank ``Buster'' Brouillet, a veteran politician with 32 years of public service. Tate won.
