The Jane Austen phenomenon is into its third year and I see no letup. Look in any direction and you find someone reading ``Emma'' or ``Persuasion,'' or ``Sense and Sensibility'' in one of two forms - the novel itself, or Emma Thompson's smartly published screenplay.

Movies, of course, have been vital if not indispensable to the Austen resurgence. And that's a wonder, for the very best part of Austen - the author's wise and witty observations - cannot be filmed or easily reconstructed as dialogue.
