MAN, DOG RETRACE 900-MILE TREK OF THE DONNER PARTY.(Getaways)

From: Seattle Post-Intelligencer | Date: November 7, 1996 | Copyright information

A man and his dog braved a 900-mile trek across barren desert and rugged mountain trails to follow the trail blazed by the Donner Party.

Fittingly, winter met the pair at their destination.

Bill Pugsley, 52 ((age)), of Reno, Nev., arrived at Donner Memorial State Park on Oct. 31 - 150 years to the day the covered-wagon pioneers became stranded by heavy snow at the same spot.

As Pugsley walked the final steps, the sun looked through thick clouds after a series of storms left more than a foot of snow in the Sierras above Donner Lake. The temperature hovered around 40.
