The second in a pair of giant telescopes atop the 13,796-foot-high Mauna Kea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island was formally dedicated yesterday.

Like its nearby twin, the new telescope, Keck II, has a segmented light-gathering mirror about 33 feet in diameter, making the two by far the largest telescopes ever built.
