When Sen. Bob Dole ran for re-election in 1974, a reporter asked him what President Nixon could do to help.
``He could stage a flyover of Kansas,'' Dole replied, flashing a trademark grin.
Nixon was forced from office that year by the Watergate scandal, while Dole barely survived. His Democratic opponent was ahead until he made the foolish mistake of trying to hold Dole responsible for Watergate.
