``Kiss of the Spider Woman'' breaks all the rules of musical theater. The story line is political and challenging. There's more dialogue than dancing, the tunes aren't particularly catchy, and the hero is a homosexual.

That last exception makes the musical - currently running at the 5th Avenue Theatre - triumphant. Over the two hours of song, dance, torture and social and political discussion, the stereotype of a gutless, swishy queen is trashed and burned.
