The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has announced the recipients of its annual awards, and one of them, soprano Jessye Norman, represents a watershed of sorts: She is the first honoree to have been born after World War II.

Norman is to receive her award at a gala at the Kennedy Center on Dec. 7 with the four other 1997 recipients: actress Lauren Bacall, singer and songwriter Bob Dylan, actor Charlton Heston and dancer Edward Villella.

Norman will join singer Aretha Franklin as the youngest of the award's recipients. She will be 52 ((age)) next week, the same age ...
