A group trying to retrace explorer Leif Ericsson's historic ocean journey to North America called off its effort yesterday but pledged to attempt it again next year.
The group, led by author-adventurer W. Hodding Carter, made its decision after their boat, a replica of Ericsson's Viking ``knarr,'' broke its rudder and had to be towed back to Greenland.
