DRUG'S SIDE EFFECTS LINKED TO 89 DEATHS, SAY JAPANESE.(News)

Side effects from a new drug used to fight colon, lung and cervical cancer have been linked to at least 89 deaths, hospital and government officials said yesterday. But the government has refused to disclose details of the circumstances until next month.

Doctors demanded that the Health and Welfare Ministry release more information about the deaths associated with irinotecan hydrochloride.

The ministry said Tuesday that of 5,430 cancer patients treated with the drug since April 1994, at least 39, or 0.72 percent, have died from side effects of the drug.
