The musical form ``nocturne'' was first used by the Irish composer John Field in the early 19th century and made famous by Chopin. It was intended as a ``night piece,'' in which dramatic turmoil can be framed with dreamy and melodious harmonies.

Buto-Sha Tenkei, which made its local debut Thursday night at Washington Hall Performance Gallery, does not truck with that tradition. Its ``Nocturne,'' choreographed and designed by Ebisu Torii, is a series of bizarre images that seeks to disturb and mystify. Its night readings are sobbing nightmares, not euphonious visions. ...
