Pacific Northwest Ballet has a new work, ``Les Biches,'' that tries hard to be provocative and up-to-date. Unfortunately, it is old hat and oddly pointless.

Mark Dendy tries to accomplish in his ``Les Biches,'' premiered Tuesday night at the Opera House, what Bronislava Nijinska did in her ``Les Biches'' 73 years earlier.

His intentions were honorable, but updating a vague satire of young, fashionable Parisians in the 1920s into a parody of young, fashionable Americans in South Beach, Fla., is not as easy as it might seem.
