The play's nearly over and its principals are lying dead on the stage when the audience learns the fate of two courtiers, Rosencrantz and Gildenstern, who have been hanged in England.
After Hamlet's demise, theirs is insignificant. They are dimensionless foils in a great tragedy. As Gildenstern cheerfully admits to Hamlet, he and his partner have no claim to special notice: ``On fortune's cap we are not the very button.''
In Western art, glass isn't the cap's button either. It serves to swell a scene, to decorate, comfort and beguile.
