She was alone on stage. She was standing up, then, suddenly, she stopped, swayed a tiny bit, then catapulted backward into a rocking chair, as if her spine had been ripped from her body. The rocking chair moved gently back and forth, her hand drifting across the floor.

It was the greatest death scene I've ever seen. The year was 1977, the play was ``The Royal Family,'' a middling George S. Kaufman satire of the Barrymores, and the actress was Eva Le Gallienne, playing the family matriarch.
