American astronomical experts said Muslim clerics in Baghdad, apparently hoping to end U.S. air strikes, have fired ceremonial cannons announcing the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan at least two days early.

Journalists in the Iraqi capital said they heard explosions at about 9 p.m. last night Baghdad time (10 a.m. PST), but later reported the detonations were cannons heralding the beginning of a month of fasting and prayer.
