Sen. Patty Murray's lead over GOP challenger Rep. Linda Smith has narrowed to 8 percentage points, according to a new statewide poll.

Murray's lead dropped from 13 percentage points in a similar poll three weeks ago. It reflects Smith picking up strength in rural areas, while Murray maintains a strong lead in the Seattle-Tacoma area.

But at the same time Smith has narrowed the gap, she has seen a sharp increase in the percentage of voters that hold negative feelings about her. More people react negatively to her than the incumbent Democrat.
