A woman suing a Manhattan hospital and a genetic testing firm contends an erroneous lab test led her to abort a healthy 4-month-old fetus.

An amniocentesis test on Janet Sheikhan in 1996 showed she was carrying a female fetus with Edwards syndrome, a disease that causes mental retardation, disfiguration and sometimes early death.

Officials at Lenox Hill Hospital, where the test was taken, said yesterday the original diagnosis was right and that a pathology report the mother read a year after the abortion was wrong.
