Converting the 8-year-old downtown transit tunnel for light rail trains could cost as much as $163 million - more than three times the original estimate.

The new cost estimates, which vary greatly depending on options yet to be selected, will be presented to the Sound Transit board today. Under one option, the tunnel's Convention Place station would have to be abandoned. Under all options, the rails installed in the tunnel in 1990 will have to be torn up and replaced.
