Mariner pitching coach Stan Williams laughed yesterday when recalling his first meeting with the M's pitching staff. He had told them they could finish the season with a composite earned run average under four runs a game.

``They must have thought I was an alien,'' Williams said.

The Mariners were the laughingstock among major league pitching staffs, especially the bullpen, which regularly blew leads and cost former pitching coach Nardi Contreras his job. But since May 1, the staff ERA is 4.48, slightly above average in the offensive-minded American League.
