Many years ago, when I lived on Capitol Hill, my elderly neighbor came over one day in a snit. The vice squad had arrived unannounced and removed all the poppies from her front yard.

According to these guys, the fluffy, double-flowered poppies we both were growing were opium poppies. I was quite sure they were not, since all the pictures I had seen of opium poppies featured a red, single flower with bold stamens.

The mix we - and half the neighborhood - were growing was an old-fashioned garden strain we called peony poppies. Doubled, ruffled petals were packed so tightly ...
