Greg Johnston's article on bull trout (June 6) perpetuates a common misconception that bull trout and Dolly Varden are different names for the same species. The two local native chars are distinguished by much more than ``minute physical differences.'' Molecular genetic data clearly indicate that they are at least as distinct from each other as are another pair of native local salmonid fishes, the coastal cutthroat and steelhead trouts, which diverged from a common ancestor well over a million years ago and are correctly recognized and managed as distinct biological species.
