Judge Garland Burrell yesterday ordered Unabomber suspect Theodore Kaczynski to undergo mental competency tests next week in Sacramento and said his trial would resume on or after Jan. 22.

Kaczynski appeared resigned to the judge's ruling, designed to determine whether he is mentally fit to act as his own lawyer against charges that he waged a bloody campaign of serial bombings from 1978 to 1995.
