Abuse of illegal drugs is sending fewer people to emergency rooms in the Seattle area, a nationwide hospital survey shows.

But the survey also confirms what other indicators have said for months: Heroin use remains persistent and perhaps is growing in the Seattle area.

Public health officials say heroin use alone is a concern. But it also poses an additional risk of HIV infection. In Vancouver, B.C., a public health crisis has been declared over the growing number of infections from the AIDS virus linked to intravenous drug use.
