A Newton Centre artist's flattering quilt-like portrait of the late North Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh is stirring emotions in the San Francisco Bay area, home to a large community of Vietnamese-Americans, many of whom are decidely anti-Communist.

"I think he's a very complex leader who we need to take a closer look at. I don't think he was evil," said the artist C. David Thomas, a Vietnam veteran and the only foreigner to receive the prestigious Vietnam Art Medal.

But, argued Thomas Nguyen, 42, one of some 1,500 people who protested Saturday's opening of Thomas' exhibit ...
