SIR VIVIAN ERNEST FUCHS FRS 1908-1999

Sir Vivian's life almost spanned the century. At its beginning, Ernest Shackleton was establishing himself at Cape Evans on Ross Island. Shackleton was to get within 155 kilometers of the South Pole. By its end, virtually all of the Antarctic was being seen regularly by satellite; Antarctica had become 'a continent for science', and some measurements in the Antarctic could be done from a desk in Cambridge.
