THE PROPOSED re-opening of Birmingham Town Hall takes me back to its last re-opening, which I attended on April 12 1927 aged 16, little realising how great a background to my life that glorious building would become.

I had seen earlier the murals of city life by art students obliterated by the 1926/7 renovation.

The celebration concert included Beethoven's overture The Consecration of the House performed by the City of Birmingham Orchestra conducted by Adrian Boult, and an organ recital by G D Cunningham, the city organist, whose free Wednesday midday concerts I was to ...
