LAID-OFF B.C. SAWMILL WORKERS SUE OVER TIMBER EXPORT PERMITS.(News)

Laid-off sawmill workers have filed a lawsuit accusing provincial Forests Minister David Zirnhelt of illegally granting log export permits.

Zirnhelt, the Forests Ministry and International Forest Products (Interfor) were named as defendants in the case filed Monday in British Columbia Supreme Court by Woodworkers for Fair Forest Policy Society.

The group, represented in court by the Sierra Legal Defense Fund, is seeking to overturn a July 13 deal authorizing Interfor to export 330,000 cubic meters of timber this year, more than 65 million board feet.
