Director/writer Patricia Rozema's daring, gorgeous interpretation of Jane Austen's ``Mansfield Park'' shuns vapors and swooning in favor of the author's satirical commentary upon class and her times.

There has already been a critical backlash, citing lesbianism and a perverse focus on the slave trade that, in truth, is but a wisp of subtext in Rozema's film even though it really exists in Austen's 1814 novel.

What Rozema has done is alter the nature of the book's insufferable protagonist, Fanny Price, by pulling from Austen's journals and writings and injecting some ...
